Lettingweb Sleeps Outside

This September I joined Lettingweb as the Junior Marketing Executive. It’s a great time to be part of the organisation, with many new developments. I took on this role as I wanted to take on a new challenge and learn more about the property industry.

While working at Lettingweb, I found out more about the Lettingweb Foundation and the positive impact they had on giving back to the community. It also got me thinking of what mark I could leave during my time at Lettingweb.

As I walk to work in the morning, I walk along Princess Street. Every day I take the same route and see the same sights. As I wandered by, I couldn’t help but notice the large proportion of people sitting outside, begging as they had no place to stay. I wanted to do something about this. I wanted to make a change.

I spoke to my colleague and we discussed how we could to use the Lettingweb Foundation as a platform to raise awareness of this issue as well as try and support those who were working to end homelessness. This is where we came up with the idea to work with Social Bite and take part in this year’s Big Sleep Out.

My experience of participating in the sleep out was an eye-opener. It was one very cold, wet and windy Saturday night. It was difficult to sleep as there was constant noise throughout and I was unable to feel comfortable in such a small space. As I lay there, I thought about those who had to do this on a day to day basis and it really hit me how much of a challenge it really is.

I’m glad I had the opportunity to take part in the Sleep Out and raise awareness of homelessness as well as learn how we can do more to help those in need.

It’s easy to throw on your headphones and ignore those sitting outside asking for some spare change. We think, they must have got themselves in a really bad place, or they are too lazy to work. But through working with Social Bite and taking part in the Big Sleep Out, I have become more exposed to the reality that is for many people sleeping outside. People from all walks of life can experience homelessness and it could happen to us at any point in time. This experience has humbled me and allowed me to take a step back and see how fortunate I am that I have such a strong support system of family and friends around me.

I’m proud to say that we’ve managed to raise over £1300.00 for this cause. The Lettingweb Foundation has also kindly matched our donations so we can make an even bigger contribution to ending homelessness across the world.
