Spotlight On… Southside, Glasgow
Glasgow’s Southside is becoming more and more popular with those looking to move to the West and also those who’re looking to get more for their money.
Why live in Southside, Glasgow? Stretching from the south bank of the Clyde, Southside takes in Govan in the west to Richmond Park and Shawfield in the east and penetrates as far south as Shawlands, even to Giffnock; incorporating more than a dozen distinct neighbourhoods.
A wide choice of shops, restaurants and entertainment as well as many of Glasgow tourist hot spots including Scotland Street School Museum and House for an Art Lover, plus Tramway – the Scottish Ballet’s home and host venue for the 2015 Turner Prize – can be found in the Southside, which means that you don’t have to venture into the City Centre unless the desire so takes you. If you’re looking for greenspace, it can be found in abundance, with Bellahouston Park, Queen’s Park and Pollok Park all to choose from.

The downside? Not much!
Well connected? You’ll be placed on two mainlines into Glasgow City Centre, with trains leaving from Shawlands every half-hour (duration 11 mins), or every 15 mins from Mount Florida (11 mins). Otherwise there are a great number of buses serving all parts of the city.
Schools: Primary Schools include Holy Cross, Glendale, St Conval’s, Langside, St Fillan’s, St Mirin’s, Calderwood Lodge and Braidbar. Secondary schools: Holyrood Secondary School and Bellahouston Academy.
Where to check out: Cafes and restaurants in the Southside include the very popular Eat Deli (69 Kilmarnock Road) which has been a big hit since opening in 2011. The menu has mouth watering options for all meal times including your staple bacon sandwich to vegetarian risotto with roast beetroot and feta.
Off the beaten track, you’ll find The Fish People Café. Don’t be fooled by the fact that it’s sandwiched between a low-rise, multi-storey car park and Shields Road subway station, this is no shoddy chippy! As soon as you’re inside you’ll forget where you are and will be deliberating over whether you should go for roast stone bass fillet, tenderstem broccoli, grilled tiger prawn, ginger & chilli broth or the Tarbert landed monkfish skewer, Cajun marinade, fresh tomato & white crab salsa – just wow!
The Glad Café is not just a café but also a destination in it’s own right, as an intimate 120 capacity music venue. The menu includes breakfasts of brioche French toast, hot filled rolls and fruit and cereals, to lunches of sandwiches, soups, wraps and salads, to jumbo Mediterranean sharing plates available until late.
