Lettingweb Volunteer for Bethany Christian Trust Fundraiser
This weekend the Lettingweb team volunteered at a fundraiser for Bethany Christian Trust, a homeless charity in Edinburgh. With the help of friends and colleagues, we helped to run a great event at Davidson’s Mains Parish Church in Edinburgh, which included singers, a dance performance, face painting, teas and coffee, a cake stand (with an unbelievable amount of different kinds of cakes and treats), free hand massages, loom band making and indoor sports.
It was such a fun day, during which we managed to raise £252.21, which is a huge achievement as every bit helps.
We’re so grateful to everyone who came along to show their support despite the rain!
We were also lucky enough to have Steph MacLeod perform for us – Steph’s story is an inspiring one.
In 2006, Steph found himself in the Bethany Christian Trust Centre: a 17-bed hostel for homeless men with addiction problems. He had previously been living rough on the streets of Edinburgh where he begged for money to feed his alcohol and drug addictions. Before entering the Bethany Centre, Steph had broken contact with his friends and family, had been banned from homeless hostels, and was waking up every other day in hospital due to the severity of his drinking.
During his eight-month stay at the Bethany Centre, Steph began to address his reasons for drinking and taking drugs. He also began writing and performing songs about his experiences with addiction and homelessness. Steph continued to write music and even started performing in and around his local area after leaving the Bethany Centre in 2007. Later that year he had married and started a family, which greatly influences his writing. It was a joy to see his gorgeous daughter running around the event with balloons on Saturday!
His performance was mesmerizing and even more poignant given his past. Take a listen to Steph on youtube here.
