Edinburgh’s Most Affluent Area
Where should you look for the cream of a city’s property? Lettingweb are investigating the top areas in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee, and Edinburgh.
In this series we take a closer look at the most affluent areas in each of Scotland’s key cities before finally looking at the most expensive area to live in the entire country.
Edinburgh has long been one of the more expensive places to rent in Scotland, coming in behind Aberdeen in the four ‘big’ cities. And that’s still true this year, where several of the most costly areas in the country are located in the capital.
In a close result, EH1 was the most expensive postcode to rent in Edinburgh overall. EH1 consists of Edinburgh’s New Town around Broughton, as well as the Old Town, Castle and parts of the university. It’s an extremely varied area for property, with the Georgian grandeur of the New Town contrasting with the winding, much older alleys around the Royal Mile.
So we did some research into what’s on offer if you want to live in Edinburgh’s most affluent area:
City Centre, Edinburgh Properties
1 Bedroom Flat, Castle Terrace – £750 PCM
We chose two properties that encompass those two areas this week. First up is this flat on Castle Terrace, with some Georgian splendour (though the property isn’t strictly in the Old Town) overlooking the Castle for some stunning views.
It offers a taste of luxury as well, with a walk-in wardrobe accompanying spacious living and sleeping areas. The bay window is a beautiful traditional Edinburgh spot for taking in the breathtaking panorama over the castle and beyond.

2 Bedroom Flat, Niddry Street – £850 PCM
And over to the Old Town for this flat, which is on Niddry Street in between Cowgate and the Royal Mile just off South Bridge. You can’t really get much more central than this, with the hub of Edinburgh’s student nightlife just around the corner.
It’s not only the location that you are paying for though. This modern, stylish apartment would make a great home for anyone. Situated on the fifth floor, the flat has views over and beyond the alley its located on and far above The Banshee Labyrinth, which refers to itself as ‘Scotland’s Most Haunted Night Club’.
